HELLO! EXCUSE ME!

The Attention Volunteer And 56 Points For Your Attention Scorecard

In our last ‘quick read’ email between newsletters - we mentioned 10 volunteer types that we discuss in the first Gold Club Membership package on Trend Watching. These are the:

1.  shop around volunteer 6.  family volunteer
2.  attention volunteer 7.  adventure volunteer
3.  time volunteer 8.  corporate volunteer
4.  work it out volunteer 9.  you must volunteer
5.  web wise volunteer 10. significance volunteer

The biggest volunteer recruiting challenge

We also asked you the question: Which volunteer type do you think is one of biggest recruiting challenges for many organizations and they don't even know? Hello, excuse me!!! Do I have your attention? It is the 'attention volunteer'. So important is the attention volunteer to every organization or group that if you ignore this trend and volunteer type - you will surely be left behind. So let's take a closer look at our attention volunteer.

How did the attention volunteer evolve?

Quite simply, the attention volunteer is the result of our state of information overload. As a result, we've moved from the age of information to the age of attention. Consider these facts about our information overload. Worldwide, there are over 300,000 new book titles published every year. There are currently over 400,000 scholarly journals. Let's not even begin to consider the number of pages out there on the internet. Can you see why getting someone's attention is such a big challenge?

We have shortened our attention span

The reality is that we now have more information available to us than ever before, yet the human brain has not evolved to a point of being able to process this greater amount of information, any faster than it did before. In order to cope with this information overload, we have actually shortened, rather than lengthened our attention span.

We now pay little attention to a lot, or no attention at all

We pay little attention to a lot of things on a superficial level, or we pay no attention to them at all. One of the biggest challenges for those in business trying to sell products and services and for those in the non-profit world, trying to sell the volunteering opportunity - is to get people's attention. Make no mistake, if you cannot even get people's attention - they'll not know about your volunteering opportunities, and they won't be able to buy that volunteering experience.

You have to see the message nine times

Recent research has found, that in order for people to buy a product, they must have seen the selling message at least nine times in order for it to even become part of their conscious thinking - to get noticed. It is only when you become aware of the message that you can then make a buying decision.

Traditional methods to get people's attention aren't working

Many of the traditional ways of getting attention just aren't working. Think about what this means. In the future, to even capture the attention volunteer’s interest, you will need to consider different and unique ways to get your volunteering message seen and heard above the advertising and the marketing noise that now exists in the world.

Last but not least - here's a quick recognition idea using 'quotes', from Jill Tilson...

Thanks Judy, I have received the ebook and it has already inspired me! I will give each person at the Christmas Party a different quote to read to introduce themselves. "Hello my name is...and my quote says...
