7 Trend Watching Ideas on Volunteering

and the Working World!

Trend watching can show you the present and the future
You might think that keeping up with trends has little to do with recruiting and retaining volunteers. Think again! Many traditional voluntary groups are now scrambling for volunteers because they were unaware of or didn’t respond to changes going on around them. Rather than end up in a crisis mode, stay ahead of the game and make yourself aware of the political, economic, social and technological trends happening around you. Let's take a look at just one trend now - our changing working world.

The world of work keeps changing

Our working lives have changed so much and this has certainly affected the volunteering world. There are more women working, more casual and part-time workers, and more home based businesses than ever before. Fewer people now hold a job for life, and most people now change careers during their working lives. Get your creative juices flowing and consider ways to capitalise on these working world trends.

Women in the workforce
Has your organization traditionally relied on women as volunteers? With more women now in the paid workforce than ever before, either through choice or economic necessity, fewer women are able to spare the time to volunteer. However, it is women that do make up the greater number of part-time workers. Look for ways to target these part-time workers and other new sources of volunteers in the community. As one door closes, another always opens!

What women want from volunteering has changed
Not only are there more women in the workforce, they are in a broader range of occupations than ever before. Those who do volunteer are demanding more challenging and rewarding assignments. As with all trends, the key is to recognize and respond to this trend - rather than judge it! Look at the volunteering roles you are now offering and explore ways of creating even more stimulating and satisfying tasks.

Volunteering opportunities in retraining programs
Consider how your organization can benefit from retraining programs. There are a number of training and personal development schemes for people who have been redeployed. When you connect with these programs you can offer people the chance to develop new work-related skills through volunteering.

Multiple careers in our working lives
Be aware of the trend away from having a job for life towards having multiple careers over our working lives. Promote volunteering as the bridge between careers. Emphasize that volunteering allows people to learn new skills and to experiment with new work environments and careers before committing themselves to a total change. Be creative and you can offer voluntary work that gives people the chance to try before they buy!

As employers become more desperate workers have the power

With our aging population and the increasing labour shortages, the power has shifted from employers to employees. The competition for talented employees has become fierce. The idea of potential applicants waiting nervously in the reception area before being interrogated and trying to sell themselves to some impersonal panel are fast disappearing. It is now employers that have to sell themselves to applicants and hope that someone will actually want to join them. Now consider your volunteer recruiting methods - which way are you moving? The future may well be where the potential volunteer applicant interviews a range of organizations to choose which one is right for them.
