Issue 19
Volunteer Management Newsletter Part 1 and Part 2
Get on Target for Volunteer Recruitment Success (continued)
Homework Time
Find out as much as you can about your volunteer target group. Put your team to work on some simple market research about your target group: their hobbies, interests, likes and dislikes and so on. The more information you have about your prospective volunteers, the better you will be able to tailor your approach to appeal to them. For example, if you’re seeking young people, talk to them about what they like doing, where they hang out, what music they like and so on. If you can understand and relate to your target group, you’re well on your way to recruiting them as volunteers.
Time Out
Find out the busy and quiet times for your volunteer target group. For example, if you are targeting university students, find out when examinations are held and semester holidays fall. Designing an entire recruitment campaign to be launched during exam week would have limited success. So plan to recruit at a time that suits your target group rather than just your organization.
Reading On
Find out what magazines or trade journals your target groups read. You can ask at the library, speak to people in the target group, or check with their union or association. Rather than just advertising for volunteers in the general print media, place your advertising and articles in the publications where they’re most likely to be seen and read.
So begin to look at strategies on what markets to target and how to get to them. You can read more about target marketing in my book Count Me In! 501 Ideas on Recruiting Volunteers and in the great FREE Bonus E-Book available for you now when you click on the book and scroll to the bottom of the newsletter.

Easter Feedback from the Field
One more thing! Just some feedback on the Easter idea in the previous volunteer management newsletter issue.
Here's the result for one member - go Gwen!
Hi Judy
I have followed the tip. In the tray of each volunteer I placed a little parcel of 3 little 'good quality' eggs in a cellophane bag tied with curling ribbon and attached cards with a cute note. Thus far every one has thanked me and they all seemed to be really chuffed that I made the effort. It was worth the hour it took me to do it.
