Volunteer management, volunteer recognition and volunteer recruitment ideas for you.

Hi Everyone,

In previous weeks we’ve considered a range of barriers to people becoming volunteers for your group or organization.

If you missed any of the ideas you can read them on the previous blog posts.

Another potential barrier after joining up to volunteer and then ends with the volunteers not staying is about the orientation that the volunteers attend.

THE VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT ORIENTATION

Does your orientation consist of quick introductions to people who barely acknowledge the new volunteer’s presence? Do you hand them the thirteen volumes of organizational policies and procedures to read as you disappear out the door muttering “good luck with it all”?

YOUR VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT ORIENTATION PLAN FOR VOLUNTEERS

Or do you have an orientation plan that aims to provide reassurance to your new volunteers about their most important concerns on fitting in, being able to do the job, not getting lost or not looking stupid?

Volunteer management, volunteer recruitment and volunteer recognition ideas for you!

Hi Everyone,

Here is another idea for you in volunteer management:

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND VOLUNTEER SELECTION INTERVIEWS

Over the past few weeks we’ve considered barriers to volunteer recruitment. These ideas are found on previous blog posts.

Now let’s have a quick look at interviews as a means of volunteer selection. Many people say that although they have forms, it is their interview process with potential volunteers that is their best selection process for potential volunteers.

HERE IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION

But here is an important question. HOW DO YOU KNOW? That’s right! How do you know that interviews are the best selection method? Has this ever been tested?

Has your group or organization just assumed that this is the best way?

IF NOT TESTED THEN ASSUMPTIONS BECOME RULES AND CHANGE TO FACTS

Now, it just might be that interviews are your best volunteer selection process. But if this is never questioned and tested, then it is an assumption. What if you tested this and found out that actually interviews weren’t that effective?

Interviews take a lot of time and energy to conduct, so what if they actually made little difference to the quality of your volunteers compared to just filling in a form? Something to think about in volunteer management and volunteer recruitment.

Enjoy!
