"When you want to be accepted in other people's worlds, you need to show that you're trying to fit in.  Show your interest and give it time."

Kenneth Blanchard

"To genuinely open a project/service to diverse communities involves the establishment of advisory groups, networking with ethnic organizations, sharing decision-making and using ethnic media for recruitment and promotion.  Each of these activities involves negotiation of difference, which leads to the development of culturally appropriate resources and increases the relevance of activities to the local population.  Furthermore, the potential for improving access to programs and activities demonstrates a commitment to human rights and equity principles."

Anita Vangelista

"Recruitment campaigns could be made more effective with target marketing and market research."

The Six R's of Recruiting

REACH

Reach out and select the volunteers you want through target marketing.  Target marketing can get you the best volunteers for the job and save a great deal of time in the selection process because you have already pre-selected.  A quick story!  A man was arrested in a small country town for shooting off a firearm.  Police were stunned at how good a shot he was, the bulls-eyes found on walls, signs, etc all had a single bullet hole in the very centre.  When asked where he learnt to shoot so accurately, he replied that actually he wasn't that good a shot at all.  What he did was shoot the bullet first and then draw the bulls-eye around the bullet hole.   What about targeting the people you really want and then designing the job around them?  Begin to think outside the box!

Want a volunteer to help with writing media releases for your organization?  Don't feel  comfortable talking in public?  This happens to be the number one fear of people. What about targeting a prospective volunteer who is studying journalism at University?  Or attending the local chapter of Toastmasters or the National Speakers Association of Australia, to recruit a volunteer speaker for your organization. Networking with these groups may provide the answer to your need for a special type of volunteer who is an expert in their field.

"The major problem plaguing many nonprofit industries is the failure to embrace a marketing orientation in what has become a marketing-driven environment."

Barry J McLeish
